Explore Melwel Lodge
Of land & Lake... Exploring the good nature of Melwel Lodge
Big Basswood Lake shoreline is one of the cleanest and largest inland lakes in Ontario, and consistently ranks Number 1 by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources for water clarity. The lake is about 7,000 surface acres, 300 feet deep, with 30 miles of shoreline. You can drink the water right from the lake (which to our way of thinking is the way water should be!). Approximately 75% of the shoreline is in its natural uninhabited state including majestic granite bluffs, as well as secluded sandy beach coves.
The voyageur trail passes right beside the property.
Packed or shore lunches are available on a prearranged basis.
Fishing at Melwel Lodge
With its unsurpassed water quality, Big Basswood Lake is home to an abundance of native trout, whitefish, smallmouth bass, walleye and brook trout. Local guides can take you out on the lake to catch these prize fish or our Melwel Lodge guests are welcome to use the Melwel boat ramp. (This is not a public boat ramp)
The lake is so clear that fisherman say they can see the fish 30 feet below the boat!
The month of June is prime time when the trout are feeding on the surface. As summer approaches, the lake trout go deep and smallmouth bass become active, from 6 inch kids’ specials up to 5 lbs! Late August and the fall is when our salmon runs occur, and 20+lbs Kings and ever iridescent Pinks provide lots of action.
Local, full service guides are available on a prearranged basis.
$120 per day if you supply your own boat and
$200 per day for all inclusive guides.
Fishing licences are required in Ontario:
